For our next Salon evening, this Thursday, June 15th, we welcome Balázs Dénes, director of the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (Társaság a Szabadságjogokért), who will be here to discuss the work of the HCLU/TASZ. Balázs and his colleagues – some of whom will hopefully also be joining us – represent a young generation of Hungarian legal activists. Through their passionate and committed work they are expanding the protection of fundamental rights and civil liberties in Hungary, advocating for and monitoring legislative and policy developments that enhance citizens’ rights, and helping individuals exercise those rights.
The
HCLU’s policy areas include patients’ rights, access to public
information, right to privacy of personal data, freedom of expression,
drug policy, and HIV/AIDS policy. For those
non-Hungarians among us who are cut off from Hungarian news because of
our language inabilities, Thursday’s program presents a unique
opportunity to learn about these prominent policy issues in our host
country, and to hear from the individuals who are making change happen. Balázs
is an engaging speaker who himself will acknowledge
that his passion for the subject can set him talking for hours. We look forward to having you all join us -- it promises to be an interesting and enlightening evening.
